'Speak, Memory. On archives and other strategies of (re)activacion of cultural memory', en el Cairo

Como algunos saben desde hace tres días me encuentro en Cairo, Egipto, participando del simposio 'Speak, Memory. On archives and other strategies of (re)activacion of cultural memory', una iniciativa de discusión tremendamente importante organizada por Laura Carderera y Townhouse Gallery. Lamentablemente las discusiones y el programa es realmente intenso y me será imposible reseñar lo conversado, pero ciertamente estos dos primeros días han permitido contraponer y friccionar distintas iniciativas de recuperación y reactivación de archivos (o a través de estrategias de archivo), sean institucionales o independientes, principalmente de Medio Oriente y Asia. Mi contribución particular fue el primer día, casi sobre el arranque, sobre el trabajo realizado hasta hoy con la Red Conceptualismos del Sur, compartiendo mesa con Kristina Khouri del proyecto 'The History of Arab Modernities in the Visual Arts Study Group', y me alegra mucho que haya habido tan intensa recepción y afinidad crítica de varios de los invitados y participantes respecto al trabajo que hemos realizado hasta hoy. Ciertamente entre América Latina y Asia y Medio Oriente hay poco o prácticamente ningún contacto en materia de investigación e intercambio crítico, pero dado el interés de generar redes de los mismos proyectos y la particular afinidad que ha surgido entre varios de nosotros no tengo dudas en que eso puede cambiar en años siguientes, e incluso que Lima pueda recibir alguna de estas iniciativas y ser parte de estas discusiones. Los puntos de contacto y preocupaciones son bastante similares, incluso en sus modos de entender la relación con el Norte, pero sobre eso sería larguísimo comentar ahora. Entre los proyectos y presentaciones que rápidamente me gustaría destacar está la de Vasif Kortun sobre Platform Garanti de Estambul, un espacio de producción crítica y artística realmente excepcional; la presentación de Claire Hsu sobre el inmenso proyecto Asi Art Archive en Hong Kong --que tal vez deba pronto visitar-- el cual es sin duda la iniciativa más ambiciosa de recuperación y publicación de fuentes de arte asiático; la presentación de Negar Azimi sobre el Arab Image Fundation; el proyecto artístico de Adam Broomberg y Oliver Chanarin sobre surrealismo egipcio; y el proyecto de Barnaby Drabble llamado Curating Degree Zero, una iniaciativa de exploración y experimentación sobre los límites y formatos de la curaduría. Hoy habrán también presentaciones interesantes: las de Sean Dockray y su proyecto de piratería AAAARG.ORG, el trabajo del grupo indio PAD.MA (Public Access Digital Media Archive), el proyecto e ideas del 'archivo universal' del Museo Reina Sofía de Madrid, una conferencia de Beatrice von Bismarck sobre el trabajo de la artista alemana Peggy Buth, entre otras discusiones que prometen un buen final! Luego de este encuentro enrumbo para Beijing por empaparme un poco de iniciativas y proyectos locales, y luego a Shanghai para la conferencia internacional anual del CIMAM “COMMON GROUND FOR MUSEUMS IN A GLOBAL SOCIETY”, que también promete discusiones interesantes. Intentaré volver a postear antes de viajar a China.

Speak, Memory. On archives and other strategies of (re)activacion of cultural memory'

Borrowing from the title of Vladimir Nabokov’s classic autobiography, 'Speak, memory' is a three-day event structured around presentations, panel discussions, screenings, and artist talks exploring the rich array of methodologies that can be adopted to unearth, revisit or reactivate past artistic practices.

Recently, the Middle East has seen the emergence of a series of archival and historiographic endeavors focused on a local and regional history of modern and contemporary art. In response to the scarce and scattered art historical documentation of the region’s most recent past, a growing number of researchers, curators and artists have begun collecting documents and recording the oral histories of artistic practices and exhibitions that have seemingly been forgotten, misinterpreted or dismissed.

As these research projects gain momentum, private collectors and newly created museums are also slowly acquiring artists’ archives, magazines and other remnants of the region’s 20th century cultural history. These developments are not unique to the Middle East. A similar phenomenon has been taking place in Latin America, where private collectors, foreign museums and universities have been buying and exporting privately held archives related to artistic production of the 60’s and 70’s.

The current situation calls for a critical discussion between institutions, collectors, artists, curators, and researchers interested in reactivating recent cultural memory in a way that enables the creation of a multiplicity of narratives and ready access to these histories. 'Speak, memory' seeks to instigate an informed debate on the challenges and strategies for the preservation of modern and contemporary art histories, focusing on those that have been scarcely documented or are underrepresented in dominant art historical narratives. In addition, the symposium will present archival initiatives that stand out for their successful organizational model, accessibility and discursive potential, as well as online platforms that are already providing possibilities for collaboration. Rather than being a one-time event, the symposium aims to create a network of archival initiatives and broader historiographic endeavors that can facilitate a series of ongoing conversations and collaborations.
